It is with profound grief that the family of Valerie Elliott (nee Hayes), 50, announce her untimely passing on Sept. 24, 2015 at Victoria General Hospital in Halifax.
Born in Glace Bay, Valerie was the daughter of Gordon and Sharon Hayes (nee MacRury).
Valerie attended Bridgeport and St. Michael’s High School in Glace Bay and went on to obtain degrees from Cape Breton University and Mount Saint Vincent. In 1983 Valerie was crowned Miss Glace Bay.
Valerie adored her children and was very involved in their activities. She frequently emphasized the importance of education to them and was a passionate volunteer at their schools.
Valerie enjoyed traveling with her husband (Dave) and their children. Travelling was one of her passions and she loved to share these experiences with her family. Valerie often shared her favourite childhood memories with her children about the times she spent with grandparents Helen and Peter MacRury in Catalone; her summer family vacations in Mira playing cards and swimming in the Mira river at Nana and Papa Hayes’ and she enjoyed many childhood summers at George’s River with her close friends Mary and Nancy.
Valerie worked hard for the benefit of others, and put her heart and soul into fundraising as: executive director, Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Atlantic Canada; director of fundraising, Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia; co-ordinator Christmas Daddies, ATV and most recently administrator, Halifax Dunbrack Soccer Club.
There weren’t too many people like Valerie where family values and kindness to others were first and foremost. She looked forward to Friday morning coffee and shopping excursions with her friends.
Valerie will be forever missed by her husband David of 18 years; sons, Logan (18) and Cole (13), and her daughter Lauren (9); her parents; Grandmother Simone Hayes; her sisters, Shanna (Paul) and Lisa (Ty) and her brother Bruce (Josephine); David’s parents Roy and Donna Elliott; her sister in-law Joanne (Lloyd); brother in-law Michael, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and eight nieces and nephews who all meant the world to her.
Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax Monday, Sept. 28, 2015 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Memorial service will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home Tuesday Sept. 29, 2015, 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the IWK Hospital or the Canadian Cancer Society.
