The family of Ruth Marie MacInnes (Duffney) is sad to announce her passing on Oct. 31, 2015. She passed away after a brief illness at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
A proud registered nurse, ‘Duff’ worked in many healthcare facilities over the years and was a greatly respected and compassionate caregiver.
Loving and proud mother to Scott, Joe (Anna) and Bev (Allan), proud Nan to Connor, whom she would brag about to anyone who would listen. A special aunt and friend to Kim, Heather and Cheryl and adoring greataunt to Kendra, Kyle, Curtis and Emma and her sister, Debbie.
Predeceased by the following family members, Ruth Duffney-McIntyre, William Duffney, Duncan McIntyre, Ronald MacInnes, Gordon Duffney and Eric Quinton.
Her children were proud to share her with so many who loved her and thought of her as a second mom, from Benson Drive, friends of her children throught the years and especially Cyril and Heather. Ruth was a passionate volunteer, she was a Cape Breton Speed Skating volunteer and Nova Scotia coaching staff involved in four Canada Games. She was a proud breast cancer survivor and immensely enjoyed and paddled with the ‘Cape Breastoneers’ and the Sydney Harbour Dragon Boat Club.
Special Olympics was her passion. She was extremely important in establishing Special Olympics to what it is today in Cape Breton and she was proud of the organization that she helped build. She was the regional co-ordinator for 15 years and held every executive position at one time for almost 25 years. She attended numerous national games. She travelled for many years with Team Nova Scotia and was so proud to be the Team Canada 2001 head coach for speed skating for the world games in Alaska.
She was the humble recipient of numerous volunteer awards including the 2000 Canadian Female Coach of the Year and the 2015 Nova Scotia Volunteer of the Year.
A life-time dream came true when she had the honour of carryind the Olympic torch in 2010.
Special thanks to Ruth’s second family Joyce, Francis and Lynette and her friends, Dr. Carol Critchley and Dr. Estelle Cameron for their compassionate care and friendship through the years.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cape Breton Special Olympics or the Cancer Patient Care Fund.
The family would like to welcome all who knew Ruth to a time of reception and remembrance, on Wednesday, Nov, 4, 2015, from 4-7 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney.
