Peter Klassen

Peter Klassen

Peter J. Klassen, age 83, passed away on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, at the Swift Current Care Centre following a courageous battle with cancer. Peter was born on June 18, 1932, in Blumenhof, SK to Gerhard & Katherina (Friesen) Klassen. He married Annie Giesbrecht on June 17, 1951. Together they raised 10 children and farmed a small mixed farm in Schoenfeld, SK. Dad was employed at the CPR, Standard Motors, and Jackson Motors before setting up an autobody shop in 1972 on the homestead — Community Auto Repair Ltd. Peter owned and operated the business and the mixed farm until his retirement in 1983. He found retirement wasn’t all that rewarding, and re-entered the autobody trade — working with his son for another seven years before retiring again. After retirement, he discovered new hobbies which included sculpting model airplanes and painting artwork. Dad & Mom enjoyed vacations, especially a trip to Bolivia, South America to visit relatives and a vacation to Hawaii. He was baptised upon confession of his faith in Jesus Christ and served a number of years as a Deacon in the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church. It was important to him to share his faith with his family with the hope we would all reunite again in Heaven. We will remember Dad as a quiet, hardworking man who loved his family. He was an avid sports fan and rarely missed watching his beloved Blue Jays. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at the Swift Current Care Centre for the compassionate care provided to Peter. Peter was predeceased by: his parents, Gerhard & Katherina; brother, George; brothers–in–law, Bill Hammel, Pete Giesbrecht, Abe Giesbrecht, Dave Giesbrecht, Jake Giesbrecht; sisters-in-law, Kay Giesbrecht, Gloria Giesbrecht, Helena Giesbrecht, Aganetha Giesbrecht, and Maria Giesbrecht; and by his grandson, Travis Cloutier. He is survived by: his wife of 64 years, Annie; children, John (Dianna) Klassen, Peter (Sandi) Klassen, Mary (Lyle) Eirich, Ron (Theresa) Klassen, Norma Klassen, Ruth (Doug) Wong, Betty (Dave) Fehr, Henry (Kendra) Klassen, Trudy Klassen, and Terah Looman; 25 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; his siblings, Agnes (Jake) Fehr, Katherine (Dave) Giesbrecht, Jacob (Viola) Klassen, John (Susie) Klassen, Abe (Mary) Klassen, Helen (John) Friesen, Margaret (John) Neustater, and Evelyn Hammel; and by brothers and sisters–in–law, Ike (Betty) Giesbrecht, Agnes (George) Peters, and Marie Giesbrecht. The Funeral Service was held Monday, November 16, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the East Side Church of God with Pastor Kevin Snyder and Pastor Bryon Bezanson officiating. The pianist for the service was Mary Henderson. “This is My Father’s World,” “The Love of God,” “Blest Be the Tie That Binds,” and “Victory in Jesus” were sung by the congregation under the direction of Pastor Bryon Bezanson. Psalm 23 was read by Mike Vanderzwaag and the tribute was given by Shane Klassen. The ushers in the church were Gerald Eirich, Jennifer Wong, Brett Breakey, and Chantel Steele. The Interment was held at Hillcrest Cemetery with Stephen Klassen, Darrell Klassen, Terry Coltart, Jordan Wong, Matthew Fehr, and Michael Cloutier serving as pallbearers.
