Cecilia "Celie" Dalziel

Cecilia "Celie" Dalziel

90, of Dartmouth and Orwell Cove, P.E.I., passed away peacefully on December 7, 2015, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax.
Born in Orwell Cove in 1925, she was one of 11 children of the late Frank and Marie Rooney. She is survived by her brothers Wilbert and Joseph Rooney and sisters Zita Boudreau, Marie Harris, Laurena Coughlan and Eileen Atkinson and was predeceased by brothers Julian Rooney, LeRoy Rooney, Gerald Rooney and sister Doris McCarey.
Celie suffered the loss of her great love, Jack Dalziel, in 2012, after a marriage of 64 years, a happy union that gifted them with five children, Kathy Dalziel (Bev), Frank Dalziel (Joan), John Dalziel (Cathy), Hugh Dalziel (Shirley) and Nelda Skillen (Gerald). She was also blessed with the "noise and commotion" of 12 grandchildren and the recent addition of 6 great-grandchildren.
A graduate of Prince of Wales College, she began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in P.E.I. She and Jack were wed on a snowy day in August 1948, and eventually made their home in Dartmouth. She was very active in the CWL of Saint Thomas More Church, was a founding member of the Dartmouth Boys and Girls Club, was very active in Unicef and was a renowned bridge player. As her family matured, she was encouraged back into teaching. Mom spent many years at Caledonia Junior High enjoying the students and the lifelong friends made in the teachers' room. As her boys began their university studies at St. Mary's, she joined them for evening courses and completed her BA while still teaching and running a family. She and Jack built a retirement home in Orwell Cove where the door was always open to family and friends. During one summer, they recorded serving over 500 meals to family and friends before Labour Day. She was a woman of unconditional love and strong faith. She will be greatly missed.
The family's heartfelt appreciation is extended to the medical staff at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, and to the great staff and special friends at Jamieson Hall, Parkland at the Lakes.
Visitation will be in Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen Street, Dartmouth on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, (corner Main & Caledonia Road, Dartmouth) on Friday, December 11 at 11 a.m. Reception to follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations to your local food bank, Dartmouth Boys and Girls Club or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
