It is with profound sadness, that we, the family, announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Michael 'Mick' Bernard MacGillivray, age 86, on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015, surrounded by his loving family, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, after a lengthy illness.
Born in New Glasgow, he was the eldest son of the late Bernard and Theresa (Lewis) MacGillivray.
Dad worked as a stevedore at CN and later as a bartender at Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 008, Sydney Mines, where he was an associate member and avid dart player.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 40 years, Vera (Gillis-Milley); daughters, Beverly (Chris) Buckland, Bernice (Stephen) Fortune and Debbie Milley (Bernie Hart); grandchildren, Abigael and Rebecca Buckland, Matthew and Meaghan Fortune, Brandon and Aaron Fry; great-grandson, Dominick Chisholm; brothers, John (Heather), Gerald (Carolyn) and Jimmy; sister, Marie Crispo, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Joseph and Gerard; sisters, Lois Monaghan, Helen Rogers, Joan Pearcey and Diane Jesty; parents-in-law, Roddie and Veronica Gillis, and brothers-in-law, William and Lawrence Gillis.
We would like to thank the staff of McDougall Court for the wonderful care given Dad during his time there. We will be forever grateful for your kindness and compassion. Special thanks to Dr. Michel McKeough and Louise for your care and support.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines on Sunday, Dec. 20, from 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held in Holy Family Church on Monday at 10 a.m., with Fr. James Oliver officiating. A reception will follow at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 008, Sydney Mines.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dad’s memory may be made to McDougall Court, Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney, or to the Alzheimer’s Society.
