Passed peacefully away on January 8, 2016 in his 90th year, David Kendall Peters of St. John's, Dentist, Organist, Kiwanian, and proud Canadian. Predeceased by his wife Dorothy Jane (Anthony), originally of Grand Falls, his parents E.F. (Fred) and Katharine (Kit) neé Kendall, his stepmother Marjorie neé Blythe, his in-laws, Moses and Leah Anthony, his sister Marion Scott and his brother John and their spouses. Leaving his daughters Ruth (Graham Wakeham), Jane (Constantine Dmitriev), Gillian (Jeremy Pridham) and son David (Gail Sullivan), grandchildren Allison and Carolyn Pridham, John and Ann Peters, his brother James and his wife Penelope in Goderich, Ontario and a large circle of relatives and friends. David was educated at Prince of Wales College, Memorial College and Dalhousie University from where he graduated in 1950 with the Alpha Omega Plaque for highest academic standing in Dentistry. He practiced in St. John's until his retirement in 2006. He was actively involved in dental professional organizations and was President of the Canadian Dental Association in 1972-73, the first Newfoundlander to hold this position. David held the Licentiate Diploma of the Trinity College of Music, London and was Organist and Choir Director at Fort Pepperell from 1944-45, at Cochrane Street United Church from 1951-1982 and 2010-2013. He was organist of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (Kirk) from 1983-1998. While at Cochrane Street, he oversaw the installation of the magnificent Casavant organ, still the largest single organ in Newfoundland. While at the Kirk, he oversaw the restoration of the organ, now named the Dorothy Peters Memorial Organ. As a solo recitalist, David appeared regularly in concert, on radio and on television. His male chorus, the Terra Novans, performed at Expo 67, Parliament Hill and recorded an LP of Newfoundland songs. In his retirement, David catalogued every pipe organ in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador for the Royal Canadian College of Organists. David was a member of the Kiwanis Club of St. John's, held various offices within the organization and was Governor of the Eastern Canada and Caribbean District of Kiwanis International in 1980-81. He was a founder of the St. John's Kiwanis Music Festival, a member of the Hall of Honor and an Honorary Life Member of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals. David was a recipient of the Queen's Jubilee Medal 1977 in recognition of his contribution to his community and his profession. The family wishes to thank Adult Rehabilitation, L.A. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation on Saturday, January 9 from 2-4 p.m. and Sunday, January 10, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 11, at 2 p.m. from St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church with interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
