GILLISS, DOROTHY CLARE
1928 - 2016
“The Lord Is our Shepherd, He has called Home one of his own.” Dorothy C. Gilliss of the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home and formerly of the North Napan Road passed into a more peaceful place at the age of 87, on Sunday, January 17, 2016. Born in Napan on September 6, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Annie (Henderson) MacKnight.
Dorothy obtained her degree from St. Thomas University & had a 35 year profession as Teacher / Principal, having taught at the Traer School, Loggieville School, White School, and retired from the D.L. McLaren School at the former CFB Chatham. Dorothy had many talents, knitting, sewing, crocheting and oil painting. Dorothy loved the outdoors, hunting, camping, 4 wheeling and her skidoo. Dorothy was a member of the Carmel United Church, Napan; a former member of the choir and U.C.W. and a member of the N.B. Retired Teachers Assoc. Dorothy had a special place in her heart for animals, especially dogs, her latest companion, “Koda”.
Dorothy is survived by her brother in law, Murray MacNaughton, of Miramichi; a special niece, Kathy Anne Lowe (John), of Lethbridge, AB; three sisters in law, Mrs. Lillian Morrison, of Miramichi, Mrs. Rita Gilliss and Mrs. Stella Gilliss, both of Napan; in addition to several additional nieces and nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband Harold (2009), one sister, Isabel MacNaughton (2012).
Dorothy’s time at the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home was made most comfortable by the staff. Dorothy enjoyed their sense of humor and style while they provided the care she required. The staff truly MADE it her home, treating her with dignity and respect, enriching her life with great kindness and attention. Dorothy is now released from Parkinson’s and reunited with Harold.
Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., on Thursday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral service will be held from Carmel United Church, Napan, on Friday, January 22, 2016, at 2 pm, conducted by Rev. David Cleveland. Interment will be in the Black River Community Cemetery, later in the spring.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home or Carmel United Church would be appreciated by the family.
