Passed away in peace and dignity at the Health Sciences Complex after a long and arduous struggle with daunting health challenges, Anthea, beloved wife of Edsel Bonnell for more than 55 years. Anthea was a born leader and volunteer who would never fail to accept the challenges of responsibility where needed, and set an example for others to follow, without ever being over-bearing. As an enthusiastic guide-leader, athlete, and Head Girl at Bishop Spencer College she learned and practiced principles of teamwork and leadership which she retained throughout her life in career, community and church service, family and personal activities. As a volunteer for worthy causes, she was indefatigable. She inspired all who knew her with her boundless love, compassion, understanding, tolerance, patience, sincere kindness, and generous charity. It was widely known and often remarked that if Anthea was your friend, you had a true friend for life. In family life, she was loving, gentle, a font of sound advice, and an inveterate supporter for all her loved ones, with unqualified outpourings of love for her husband, her boys and their wives, and her adored grandchildren. In addition, she was a woman of great intelligence, strong convictions, and deep personal faith. The light she brought to her world will continue to shine brightly through others who will honour her memory. In accordance with Anthea's wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation with family and friends will be held at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Tuesday, January 26, and Wednesday, January 27, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of the life and gifts of Anthea will be held at Gower Street United Church at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 28. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory would be gratefully accepted for the community service outreach program of the Gower Community Band which owes its very existence to her untiring work, or to a children's charity of your choice.
