Irma Sainz

SAINZ, IRMA C.
On February 13th, 2016, at home with the love of her family surrounding her, we announce the death of Irma Concepcion Sainz. Irma was born on December 26th, 1930 in New York, New York to the late Antonio and Josephine (Lopez) Ramos. She lived her formative years in Brooklyn, New York amidst a large and close Spanish family. In 1949, she met Frank, the love of her life, and, after their marriage, they lived and raised their daughter, Beatriz, in Cuba. When Frank decided to pursue further education in the late 1950’s, UNB Fredericton was the first school to offer him a place in the engineering faculty. Irma looked at a map of North America and decided that Fredericton and New York were very close to each other. When she arrived here, she began to realize all the differences but embraced them completely and came to love the people and the province which became her chosen home. After UNB, Frank began employment with NB Power and Irma, Frank, Bea and Ana travelled the province as Frank was transferred. After her family had grown and gone, Irma became restless and was encouraged by Frank to return to university. She proudly graduated from UNBSJ in 1983 and then went on to pursue a Masters in Arts in Spanish. After Frank’s untimely death in 1993, Irma began teaching Spanish at STU where she was an integral part of the faculty and promoted a supportive environment for all her students. She retired at age 80. In the interim, she had moved to Oromocto to live with her daughter and son-in-law and became a vibrant and interactive member of many community activities. Irma and Frank were active in the MultiCultural Association of Fredericton and at St. Dunstan’s Church where they acted as mentors to the many Hispanic immigrants who came to the area.
Irma is survived by her daughters, Dr. Beatriz Sainz (Steven Alexander), and Ana Sainz (Laura Rubino): by her grandchildren, Laura (Alexander) McDonald (Dr. Gordon McDonald), Joel Alexander (Tiara Samson), and Alexandra Rubino-Sainz; by her great-grandchildren, William and Owen McDonald, and Ridley and Flash Alexander. She is also survived by a special niece, Haydee Sainz and her son, Carlos Aloma. Also surviving are her brother, Anthony (Pito) Ramos (Peggy) and sister, Ana Cerrudo. Irma leaves to mourn a large extended family in the US; cousins, Christopher Lopez, Beatrice Heuler, Billie Karner, Connie Falcone, and Frank’s family, Haydee, Ana, Maria Elena and Jorge Sainz.
Visitation will take place at the Oromocto Funeral Home on Friday, February 19th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Oromocto, on Saturday, February 20th at 11:00 am with Father Ken Weir as celebrant. Interment will take place in the adjoining cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Hospice Fredericton or the Oromocto Hospital Palliative Care Unit.
The family wish to thank Dr. Stephane Paulin, Dr. Kathy Woods, Dr.P. Bryden, Dr. K. Pawluk and Dr. C. Adam for their compassionate care during the past few years. We also wish to thank the staff on 4SW, 4NW and Oromocto Public Hospital and our devoted homemakers, especially Debbie without whom we could not have kept Mom at home.
