Elmer Ernest Meyer passed away peacefully at home on February 19, 2016 just short of his 90th Birthday. He leaves to mourn Edith, his wife of 65 years, five children; Eugene (Joan), Lynn (Ed Beakhouse), Marie (Al Lenek), Douglas (Brigitte), Dorothy (Maurice St. Jean), 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Elmer was predeceased by his parents Wilhelm and Mary Meyer, 6 brothers, 3 sisters and one great-grandchild. Elmer (the youngest of 10 children) was born on February 24, 1926 on the homestead north of Rush Lake. His early schooling was at Salt Lake School and his high school years at Rush Lake. In 1949 he met Edith Smith a local school teacher. They were married July 16, 1950 at Peace Lutheran Church and settled on the family farm until 1954, at which time they moved to Rush Lake. Elmer and his brother Abe operated the general store and service station, under the name of Meyer Bros. until he returned to farming in 1961. He commuted for the next few years, to Swift Current to work as parts man for Dale’s Implements, which later became Armstrong Implements. Elmer retired in 1991. Elmer was extensively involved with the church, on council, as treasurer, singing in the choir, and in various other capacities in both Peace Lutheran and St. Olaf from the time of his confirmation until his passing. He volunteered with St. John’s Ambulance for 27 years, attending more than his share of Bronco games. He served in the Frontier Days board from 1986-1988. He was a member of the Kiwanis serving a term as President and working in the community delivering meals on wheels, working the Christmas tree lot, the apple drive and many other numerous activities until his health began to fail this past year. Whether it was visiting a sick friend or giving a ride to church Elmer could always be counted on to be there. His pride was the Pioneer Manor which he was a driving force in building. He strove to care for and give seniors an independent and better lifestyle. His compassion and empathy for others was also evident in his many years spent assisting with funeral at Parkside Memorial Funeral Home. Over the years his many hours of service were recognized when he was presented with the Queen Jubilee Medal in 2002, he also received the Tom Stanford award of proficiency in 1977, 1987 and 1993 and was named Office Brother of the Order of St. John by the Governor General of Canada. Even with all his activities Elmer found time to farm, maintain an immaculate garden and most of all spend time with his family and friends. A funeral service was held on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. from St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Reverend Dr. Greg Kiel and Pastor Manfred Kurschner officiating. The interment took place at Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Rush Lake, SK. Donations may be made to the Peace Lutheran Cemetery Fund, the Canadian Cancer Society or the Diabetes Association.
