It is with deep regret that the family announces the peaceful passing of Marie White on Thursday, March 10, 2016, surrounded by her loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
The eldest of 15 children, she was the daughter of the late James Austin and Alice (O’Neil) Bates and lived in Bateston most of her life.
She is survived by her children, Gerard (Maureen), Dianne (Donald) Wadden, Patricia (Steven) McIntosh, Karen (the late John) White-Smith, Ferdie (Mary), James (Arlene), and Danny, as well as 14 cherished grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Eileen Boutilier, Susan MacDonald, Theresa MacDonald and Rita Bates and sisters-in-law, Iris Bates, Williamina Bates and Marie Stewart and brother-in-law, Michael White, as well as many much loved nieces and nephews.
Marie was a member of Immaculate Conception parish and a member of the CWL for over 50 years. She was also active in the ladies auxillary of the Bateston Fire Hall. She worked in the shoe department of Crowells for many years before joining the staff at Sears until her retirement. Family and friends (especially her weekly card club) were of utmost importance to her, and she will be remembered as a kind and hospitable woman with a great sense of humour.
Besides her parents, Marie was predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, Ferdinand 'Ferdie'; her sister, Alice Wilcox; brothers, John, David, Alex, Herman, Jimmy and Gerard and three infant siblings, as well as much loved son-in-law, John Smith and daughter-in-law, Marcie (Lahey) White.
Special thanks are extended to her wonderful supportive sisters, her fabulous neighbors and community members who visited or showed kindnesses in many ways, the CB homecare workers and the VON who supported her in her illness, as well as the staff of 4A for their care and compassion. Your actions will not be forgotten.
Visitation for the late Marie White will take place at Immaculate Conception Parish, Main–a-Dieu from 2–4 and 7–9 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, 2016. Funeral service will take place at the church on Monday, March 14, 2016 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Jonathan officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of choice, if desired.
