It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Gladys Marie MacNeil, 86, of New Waterford on Thursday, March 10, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late John and Genevieve (McNeil) Prior. Gladys was a member of the former Mount Carmel Church, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard. She loved to travel around the Cabot Trail and to Halifax on various bus tours. Gladys was also fond of the times spent with her husband, Malcolm, on their Carribean cruises. Most importantly, Gladys loved being surrounded by family and friends.
Surviving are her husband, Malcolm MacNeil; daughters, Genevieve (Neville) Bishop, Strathmore, Alta., Paula (David) Kearney, Antigonish, Sandra (David) Grechuk, New Waterford; sons, David (Victoria), Calgary, Alta., John (Karla), Okotoks, Alta.; sisters, Patricia (Fred) Melanson, New Brunswick, Joan (Andrew) Jurcina, Genevieve (Edward) Cook, both of New Waterford; brother-in-law, Bill Kavluk; sister-in-law, Eileen Prior, both of Ontario; grandchildren, Samia (Colin) and Jason, Vincent (Stephanie), Malcolm, and Steven, Kimberly (Jason), Ryan, and Mitchell, Karl and Ian, John, Carl, Daniel and Michael; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Emma and Sawyer; many nieces and nephews including special niece, Helen Jurcina.
Besides her parents, Gladys was predeceased by sisters Lil Chaisson, Joyce Greck and Carmel Kavluk; brother, Clifford Prior, all of Ontario.
Visitation will be held Monday, March 14, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Tuesday, March 15 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard's Parish Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
