Ruth Hall

HALL, RUTH
Ruth “Phoofie” Hall (Gillies), 87, of Annapolis Royal, N.S. (formerly of Saint John, NB and Thornhill, Ont.) born to Ken and Blenda Gillies (Saint John), she died peacefully with family at her side at the Annapolis Royal Nursing Home on March 29, 2016.
After graduating as an RN from Saint John General Hospital in 1949, she moved to Ontario to work and stayed to marry Bob and raise her four children. She later returned to nursing and worked at The Shouldice Hospital where she made lifelong friends who supported her through her entire journey with Alzheimer’s. She was fun loving and always happy outdoors – from her summers at Camp Arcadie in Sandy Cove, N.S. to “frolicking in the fields” with her niece, Susan. Mom was loyal to family and friends and many of us wear one of her beautifully and generously knitted sweaters.
Predeceased by her husband, Bob (2007); her daughter-in-law, Barb (2009); as well as brothers-in-law, Eric and Redmund; sister-in-law, Frances and Betty.
She is survived by her children, Cathy (Peter) of Annapolis Royal, Marg (Bernie) of Halifax, Andrew (Ikuko) of Kingston and Mike of Scarborough; as well as grandchildren, Claire and Rob of Halifax. She is also survived by her brother Jim (Selena) of Saint John, brother-in-law, Andy (Betty), sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Roy), cousin-in-law, Dorothy, and several nieces and nephews.
Mom never stopped missing the ocean, visiting her family and friends as often as she could. Happily, she was able to realize her dream of living by the ocean again when she moved to Annapolis Royal. Although ultimately her disease necessitated her moving to the Annapolis Royal Nursing Home, she enjoyed great happiness in knowing she was back in Maritimes.
Thank-you to the staff of the Annapolis Royal Nursing Home for their skill and compassion. A special thanks to Dr. Ken Buchholz for his superb care and kindness.
According to Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the care and direction of the Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Annapolis Royal and a family service will follow at a later date.
If wished, donations may be made to Mom’s favorite charity, “Sleeping Children Around the World”.
Online condolence may be made at www.kaulbachfamilyfuneralhome.com
