It is with great sadness we, the family, announce the passing of our father and grandfather, Bernie Gillis on April 2, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Lingan, he was the son of the late John D. and Loretta (MacKenzie) Gillis.
Bernie worked in the coal mines until retirement. He liked walking and enjoyed hockey and baseball games.
He is survived by sons, Donnie, Malcom (Tracie), Grand Prairie; daughter, Pattie 'Pat' Hogan; sisters, Mary (George) Howatt, Delores Shaw, Donna (Brendon) McMahon, Sharon (Henry) Talbot; brothers, Gary (Kathy) and Danny Gillis; as well as grandchildren, Janie, Caleigh and Breton.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his wife, Hilda (MacKenzie); brothers, John Jr. 'Bubby’ and Joseph; sister, Margaret O’Brien.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass to celebrate Bernie’s life will be held on Friday, April 8, 2016 in the Parish of St. Leonard at 10 a.m. with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment in Mt. Carmel Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the K.O.C. Hall, Plummer Avenue. All are welcome.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 902-862-7500.
