STRANG, LAWRENCE "AL"
Lawrence “Al” Strang, 74, of Riverview, and formerly of Moncton, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 14, 2016. Born in Humphrey’s, NB, he was the son of the late William and Edna (Mackay) Strang.
He is survived by is his son, Stephen and his grandchildren, Samuel and Quinn.
Al was predeceased by both parents and his brother, Paul.
Al graduated from St. Mary’s University in Halifax where he proudly played football for the Huskies. He then went on to Carleton University in Ottawa to complete his Masters in Social Work. He began his career with Community and Social Services in Ottawa in 1971, followed by a move to Toronto in 1973 where he held several senior positions within Community Services. In 1989 to 2009, he moved to Moncton where he became City Manager.
As City Manager, Mr. Strang was responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the City’s administration while spearheading the development of more innovative and responsive client services. He administered a work force of approximately 700 employees, and oversaw the City Operating and Capital Budgets. He was also the City’s representative on a number of public boards and commissions.
In addition, he facilitated the strategic direction of the Corporation, while providing policy and strategic advice to the Mayor and City Council.
During his tenure with the City, Mr. Strang was instrumental in kick-starting the revitalization of the city’s downtown; brokering the development of Moncton’s new water treatment facility and the innovative public-private partnership that made it happen; and managing Moncton’s rapid growth and development over the last decade of his service to the people of Moncton. As City Manager, he was also instrumental in reorganizing and optimizing the corporation’s administrative capacity in order to better prepare the organization to meet the challenges of a changing and rapidly growing city.
Mr. Strang held a B.A. in Political Science from St. Mary’s University and a Masters from Carleton University. He was President of the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators from 1999 - 2000, as well as being a Board member of The Canadian Council on Public/Private Partnerships, among others.
A gathering for Sharing of Memories and to celebrate Al’s life will be held at Fergusons Funeral Home Reception Centre, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Friday, April 22, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. There will be a private family interment in Port Clyde, NS at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Al’s memory can be made to the Friends of The Moncton Hospital (Oncology).
