WORT, NOREEN GERTUDE
May 12, 1919 - April 23, 2016
Noreen Gertrude Wort, of Woodstock, N.B., passed away on April 23, 2016, at the Upper River Valley Hospital, Waterville, Carleton County, NB, just under three weeks from her 97th birthday. Noreen was born in Woodstock, N.B. on May 12, 1919.
She was the last surviving family member of the late Thomas and Helen (Shea) Driscoll of Woodstock. Noreen is also predeceased by her husband Donald K. Wort (1998), her brother John C. Driscoll, her sister M. Marie Given (2012) and half sister Helen “Toots” Sutton (1989). Noreen is survived by one daughter Donna Hardy (son-in-law Alton) of Fredericton, NB, son Douglas Wort (daughter-in-law Heather) of Hampton, NB, and son John Allan “Barney” Wort of Woodstock, NB. Besides several nieces and nephews, Noreen is also survived by six grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
Noreen spent the majority of her long life residing in the Town of Woodstock. However, she also resided for a period in her younger years in the City of Edmundston, NB and resided for an extended period in her senior years at North Lake, York County, NB. In addition, and for approximately 15 successive years, various parks in mid and south Florida served as her winter residence and escape from the long winters of New Brunswick.
Noreen’s was active in her high school years with basketball and with her team travelled to various centres within New Brunswick. In later years, she was involved as a member of both the Woodstock Golf and Curling Clubs. Over the years, Noreen would have also been involved with a variety of organizations including the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 11 Ladies Auxiliary, the ANAVETS and the Order of the Eastern Star.
She began her working career with the telephone company as a local telephone operator. For a good portion of her life, she would have been a stay-at-home mom as well as serving as an administrative assistant to her husband’s general contracting company operated from an in-home office. She often spoke with a measurement of pride of her service with the St. John Ambulance and the challenges she experienced in driving ambulances to and from the City of Saint John so many years ago.
Visitation is from the Culberson Funeral Home on April 28, 2016, at 1:00 pm and funeral service to follow at 2:00 pm. Rev. Shirley Noseworthy officiating. Interment to follow at the Christ Church Cemetery.
