John Thomson

THOMSON, MR. JOHN B. C.
1920 - 2016
Miramichi - Mr. John B. Thomson of Retirement Miramichi, and formerly of Ferry Road, NB, passed away at Miramichi Regional Hospital on Sunday, May 8, after a brief illness at the age of 96. Born in Clarke’s Cove (now Morrison Cove), NB, he was the son of the late Howard and Annie (Lobban) Thomson. His wife, the late Muriel (Frost) Thomson, passed away in 2002.
John is survived by two sons, Paul of Miramichi and Stephen of Saint-Basile-le-Grand, Quebec; niece Mary Vautour of Miramichi; as well as nephews Ken MacDonald of Miramichi and Douglas Beaton of Springhill, NS.
He was the last surviving member of his generation of the Thomson family and was predeceased by sisters Jean, Mona and Victoria; as well as brothers Coburn, Wendell and Gordon.
John spent much of his life in the grocery business, starting as a boy delivering parcels to help his family during the great depression. Although he enlisted for duty in World War II, a vision problem kept him from active duty overseas, so John supported the war effort by taking a job at an RCA Victor factory in Montreal, Quebec. After the war, he returned to Miramichi to work for grocer Harry Fransblow at his store in Newcastle, where he met his future wife, Muriel Frost of Millbank. The young couple was married in 1951 and then lived for several years in Toronto, Ontario, where John worked for Loblaw’s and their son Paul was born. They returned home to work for Muriel’s brother-in-law, Ernest MacDonald, at his store in Ferry Road, and then for William R. McLenaghan, before John and Muriel became owner-operators of Thomson’s Grocery in Ferry Road, NB, from 1968 until their retirement in 1987.
After Muriel’s death in 2002, John moved to Retirement Miramichi where he became active in the social life there as well at various card parties and other seniors’ activities around the river. He also enjoyed social functions as a member of the Miramichi Highland Society. His love of family, friends, gardening, children, a drive in the country, and a good game of cards will be forever remembered and forever missed.
Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., on Sunday from 7 to 9 pm and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral service will be held from Adams Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at 2 pm, conducted by Rev. Gerald Blacquier. Interment will be in Moorefield Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Mental Health Association, Bethel United Church in Millbank, NB, or any charity of the donors’ choice would be appreciated by the family.
