Jean Florence Spiker, age 74, passed away on Friday, May 20th, 2016, in the presence of her loving husband, Art Spiker, at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK. Jean was born on November 8, 1941, in Acton, ON. When her father returned from WWII, the family settled in Chaplin, SK. Jean worked as a Telephone Operator in Cabri, SK and there she met the love of her life, Arthur “Art”. They settled in Swift Current and raised their family. Many will remember Jean from her years at Beaver Lumber as well as at the Swift Current Booster were she could be relied upon for her humour, opinion and generosity. Jean supported her children and grandchildren in their many sporting and educational activities over the years. She was a vocal supporter of the Swift Current Broncos for 40+ years. Jean could always be relied on to lend a hand, volunteer where and when needed, and was a true and trusted friend to so many.
Jean is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Arthur Spiker; her daughter, Shawna Churchill – her children, Scott (Zoe), Samantha (Brandon) and Sean; her son, Darren (Sabrina) Spiker – their son, Ben; her sisters, Dorothy (Gil) and Betty; her sisters-in-law, Annette, Phyllis and Peggy; her brother-in-law, David; and by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews as well as great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She was predeceased her son, Dean Spiker; her parents, Harry & Florence James; her brothers, Gordon (in infancy) and Harry; her sister, Judy; and by her brothers-in-law, Leonard and Ray. Jean will be forever remembered, and deeply missed, as a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and as a generous and spirited member of her community.
The Funeral Service was held on Friday, May 27, 2016 at 2:00 pm from the First United Church, Swift Current, SK with Rev. Annette Taylor officiating. The organist for the service was Patti McCleary accompanied by pianist, Janet Neubauer. “Old Rugged Cross” and “Amazing Grace” were sung by the congregation. The eulogy was shared by Shawna Churchill. The ushers in the church were Wayne Spiker, Brad Dickie, Bruce Hagman and Tom Kehoe. The Honorary Pallbearers were her grandchildren, Scott Churchill, Samantha Churchill, Sean Churchill, Benjamin Spiker. The Interment Service was held at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with her children, Shawna Churchill and Darren Spiker serving as Urn Bearers. In memory of Jean Spiker, donations made to the Swift Current Broncos Scholarship Fund and Saskatchewan Children’s Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
