It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our wonderful wife, mother, grand-mother, mother-in-law, sister and friend, Veronica (VanVelzen) Buis at the age of 82. Mom went peacefully to her rest on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by family and loved ones.
Veronica was born on Sept. 24, 1933 in Grootebroek, Holland, the daughter of the late Piet and Jaeny (Deen) VanVelzen. Mom immigrated to Canada in 1955 at the age of 21 to be with the love of her life, her husband of 61 years, Jack. Mom’s door was always open for family, friends and strangers alike, making everyone feel welcome and at home. Mom was blessed with a long and full life and had many friends along the way. Mom hosted family supper every Sunday and enjoyed a good tarabish game with her family. She enjoyed her weekly card games with her special friends, she and dad had a lifelong friendship with John and Jean. She was faithful member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
Veronica is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Jacob Buis; her five sons, Randall, North Sydney, Patrick (Amy), Fort McMurray, Brian (Joanne), Sydney, David (Susan), North Sydney, Glenn (Melody), Bras d’Or, and her only daughter, Joanne (Reggie) Day, Bras d’Or; her 10 grandchildren, Brian-Keith, Jaclyn, Ryan, Petra, Breanna, Brandon, Brittany, Jacob, William and Micayla and two sisters Nell, BC and Tea, Holland.
She was predeceased by her parents, Piet and Jaeny (Deen) VanVelzen; six brothers, Piet, Cornelus, Remmert, Jan, Vok and Nick; two sisters, Truus and Joan.
Visitation for family and friends will be held 6-9 p.m. on Sunday, July 17th in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated for Veronica, 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Diabetic Association.
