ALFRED MACKEIGAN

ALFRED MACKEIGAN

Lieu de naissance : SYDNEY

Date de décès : 19 juillet 2016

It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Alfred Ernest MacKeigan, 80, on July 19, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Born in Sydney, he was the son, of the late John and Jesse (Youden) MacKeigan. Due to his mother’s untimely death, he went to live with his Uncle Harry and Aunt Ada Youden. There he found a warm, loving home which he remained grateful for his entire life. Five cousins became brothers with lots of hunting, fishing, music and tinkering with old cars and trucks.
In 2006, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, of 48 years, Mary Christine (MacDonald). He is survived by his daughter, Elaine and her husband, Brian George, New Waterford, who cared for him for many months before being admitted to hospital. He is also survived by his son, Paul and his wife, Christie, New Brunswick.
He was a loving and kind father who loved to laugh and was willing to go to any length to help his family. He was happiest when we were all together sharing good food, laughter, and song.
He retired from the Cape Breton Post after 44 years in 1996. He began his career as a newspaper carrier, was promoted to truck driver for several years, and then completed two apprenticeship programs; Stereo Typist and Pressman. He was very proud of his career and the many good friends he had made over the years. He was especially proud of his work with his Union. In addition he was a jack of all trades who would happily help family and friends with numerous home renovations. He loved the outdoors happily gardening and taking long walks with his dog. He was a huge Maple Leafs fan and loved to vacation seeking out good places for pie.
He delighted in being a grandfather. A talented storyteller, he shared a special bond with children. He turned a small trail into the exciting ‘magic path’. Together they enjoyed sporting events, holidays and madcap adventures fueled by PB sandwiches and tea parties with a princess. He is survived by his grandchildren, Matthew (Benita) George, Jason (Sandra Murray) George; great-grandson, Tyler George New Waterford; Charlene (Taden Munro) MacKeigan, Alta. and Kevyn MacKeigan, N.B. He always had time for them and an unlimited supply of love and patience. They all have amazing memories of this kind, gentle, man who adored them. Last but not least he leaves his devoted Shih Tzu, Rusty the Brave who misses him terribly.
He is survived by brothers, Charlie (Sissy), Steve (Cecilia), Huble (late Dorothy) and Carl; Sisters, Ruth (Keith) Davis, Gert (Alf) Marsh, Cora (Joe) all of Ontario, Agnes (Rod) MacKinnon, and Joan Roberts, Sydney.
He was predeceased by sisters, Betty Ballyntine and Margaret Henry. He was predeceased by brothers, Eion, Gerry (late Ann), Don, James, Earl, Raymond (late Vicky) and Ronnie. He was also predeceased by nephews, Ron Youden and Ron Henry.
He is also survived by many brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews all of whom he loved dearly. He is also survived by Sheila (Stephen) George, New Waterford, whom he lovingly called his “adopted” daughter. Dad’s easygoing nature earned him many loyal friends over the years. He deeply loved his Ashby neighborhood and the many wonderful friends he shared it with for over 45 years.
At Dad’s request there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place.
Dad and Mom’s ashes will be interned with his mother, Jesse, at Hardwood Hill Cemetery. They will be together at last.
Family and friends are invited to Chant’s Funeral Home 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, on Saturday July 23, 2016, at 11 a.m. for a celebration and reception.
He wanted old country music, lots of food, and people telling lies about him – his words. Hope to see you there.
