It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our aunt, Josephine Agatha MacDonald, formerly of Salmon River and Marion Bridge. She was a resident of Cabot House for 30 years and passed away at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility on Friday, August 5, 2016. She passed away peacefully at the age of 93. Born in Salmon River, she was the daughter of the late Colin F. and Annie (Gillis) MacDonald.
She was a former member of St. Margaret’s Church in Grand Mira South, Sacred Heart at Marion Bridge, and in her later years St. Anthony Daniel parish in Sydney. Josephine was a registered nurse who graduated from the City Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. In her early years she worked in the United States and then came back to Cape Breton where she worked at St. Rita’s Hospital. Her last years or nursing were as head of the Diabetic Clinic. Josie was known for her kindness, joy of life and friendship. She enjoyed gardening and caring for her house plants. She also liked socializing, travelling and her hobbies of reading, painting, knitting and crocheting. She dearly loved playing cards, especially tarbish, cribbage and her ‘Bridge’ club.
Church and family were most important to Josephine. She was a beloved aunt to all her nieces and nephews and was renowned for her great fudge making ability. We all loved it! Josephine was the last surviving member of the MacDonald family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph, Duncan and Allan V. and six sisters, Isabel, Stella, Nan, Kathleen, Margaret and Mary. Josephine’s extended family sincerely appreciates the wonderful care she received over the past few years from the Harbourstone staff.
There will be no visitation, cremation has taken place. A memorial mass to celebrate the life of Josephine MacDonald will take place on Thursday, August 11, at 2 p.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland Church in Grand Mira South. Online condolences may be made to the family by visiting www.twcurry.com.
