It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved son and brother, Patrick Lloyd MacDonald, age 51, on Saturday, August 6, 2016, in Toronto. Paddy was born December 22, 1964, in North Sydney and was the son of Winnie MacDonald and the late Lloyd MacDonald of Ironville, CB. Besides his mother, Winnie, Paddy is survived by eleven siblings, his brothers, Jim (Joan), Chris (Judy), Paul, Ron (Julia), Mark (Erin), Shawn (Charlotte) all of Sydney, Michael (Taunia) of Halifax, Daniel (Jennifer) and Martin (Kristen) of Toronto and by his sisters, Ann (Brian) of Montreal and Sandi (Lloyd) of Moncton. He is also survived by nephews and nieces, Ryan (Jennifer), Kristin (David), Nicholas, Jennifer (Darci), Michael, Michelle, Victoria, Madison, Ashley, Allissa, Alexandra, Samuel, Moira, Jerome, Sylvia, Frances, Dylan, Connor and great niece, Alexa. Paddy also leaves behind several aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends. Besides his father, Lloyd, Paddy was predeceased by paternal grandparents, Jim and Belle MacDonald and maternal grandparents, Archibald and Ethel MacDonald.
Paddy struggled with mental illness over the course of his life,a disease we strive to understand. Paddy was a sensitive, congenial, outgoing and fiercely proud soul. At times it was a challenge to separate who he was from the ways his illness affected him. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing in church right up to the time of his passing.
Paddy will always be remembered by anyone who has met him for his kindness, his engaging smile, charm and outgoing personality. His presence was larger than life. Now, his struggles are over and he is at peace. He was loved dearly and will be missed by all who knew him.
Cremation has taken place and a funeral mass will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Donations can be made in memory of Patrick, to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, mental health unit.
