Date de décès : 30 août 2016
With profound sadness we announce the passing of John Francis Andrea on Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in North Sydney on July 10, 1919, John was the eldest child of the late Michael and Jeanette (Gauthier) Andrea. Raised on the family farm in Mill Creek during the Great Depression, he learned the meaning of hard work at an early age, but was also the beginning of his favourite hobbies of gardening, horseback riding, skating and swimming the “Gut”. His boyhood schooling was in Bras d’Or and Florence where he excelled in classroom work and team sports. His university studies at St. F.X. were interrupted by his years in the R.C.A.F. during WWII. Upon returning to Antigonish he finished his B. Commerce degree and secured a job with Revenue Canada from which he retired in 1979. In 1952, he moved to Sydney Mines to marry Marjory Allen and raise his own family. He was very involved as a volunteer in community organizations and a faithful member of Immaculate Conception Parish. An integral and proud part of the movement which became Resi-Care, he also made time for Neighbourhood Watch, the United Way, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and as a board member of the Sydney Mines and District Community Centre. More important than all those things was the affection he had for his family. He was a mentor, protector and supervisor to his siblings. A loving husband and a wonderful father, John will be missed by all who knew him. John is survived by his daughter, Claire (late David Harley), Sydney Mines; son, John, Dartmouth; step-son, Bill Allen (Pearl), Ottawa; three grandsons, William, Montreal, Eric and Simon, Dartmouth; two granddaughters, Natalie (Jim), Ottawa, Nancy, Ottawa and great-grandson, James. He is also survived by siblings, Rita, Dave (Barb), Francis, Elias (Agnes), Laura (Herman), Bernie, Tony (late Barb), Fr. Jake, Eugene (Anne) and many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his wife, Marjory and son, David; brothers, Joe (late Nellie) and Leonard; sisters, Olga (late Charlie) and Theresa (late Denny). The family would like to thank the staff of Harbourstone Enhanced Care for their kindness shown to John in his later years. Visitation for John Andrea will be held on Friday, September 2, 2016, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A funeral mass celebrating John’s life will take place Saturday at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church, with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Family flowers only. Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia would be greatly appreciated. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
