It is with deep sadness that we, the family of Charles “Charlie” MacNeil, Benacadie West, announce his passing on Monday, September 12, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Palliative Care AnCala Unit, with his wife and family by his side. Born in 1932, Charlie was the son of Michael Neil and Margaret MacNeil. Survived by his wife, Kaye Anne MacNeil, step-daughter, Ellie (Alan) Withers; grandsons, Kyle (Kaitlin), Logan (Taylor); great-grandson, Cooper, London ON. His brothers, Dannie (Gale), Hugh R (Mary Lou), Benacadie Pond, Ray (Carleen) Red Deer AB; his sisters, Marie Burns, Anne Jenkins Brantford ON, Jean Madore, Howie Center, Peggy Gillis, East Bay, also numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Charlie is predeceased by his first wife, Mary (MacSween); brothers, Jim, Joe, Alex and Sister, Katie. Charlie was a well-known and respected sheep and beef farmer and took great pride in his beautiful farm on Benacadie West. He was a kind gentle man loved by all his family, neighbours and his many nieces and nephews whom he cherished and always welcomed with a friendly smile and a strong warm handshake, that was one of a kind. Fluent in Gaelic, he enjoyed music, ceilidhs, concerts and especially visiting and listening to old stories of the good old days, as well as sharing some of his own. He also drove the School Bus and was adored by all his school children who helped brighten his days with all their stories of the day.
Charlie was a member of St. Barra’s Parish, Christmas Island.
Visitation for Charlie will be held on Thursday September 15, 2016, from 2-8 p.m. in the Iona Parish Hall. Funeral mass will be held the following day, Friday September 16, 2016 at 11 a.m. in St. Columba Church, Iona, with Fr. Paul Abbass officiating. Burial will follow in St. Barras Cemetery, Christmas Island. All are invited to a luncheon in the Parish Hall following the service. Donations in his memory may be made to the Christmas Island Cemetery Fund, or the Palliative Care Unit of the CBRH.
