It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, Joan Marie Sproul age 77, a resident of Lamond Street, Sydney Mines, on Tuesday September 20, 2016 at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney. Joan was born in North Sydney on August 29, 1939, she was the daughter of the late James W. “Manny” and Stella (Leroy) Baker. Joan worked as a home care worker for many years in Cape Breton and Ontario. She enjoyed spending time with her family, she loved animals, especially her dog and companion Sam. She was also very kind to many other dogs and cats in her neighborhood.
Joan is survived by her sons, Brian (Lisa Dowling), North Sydney, Don and Rob, both of Peterborough ON; her two daughters, Terri (Kevin) Chiddle, Peterborough, Bonnie (Leo) Campbell, Balls Creek; six grandchildren, Leo, Jason, Tyler, Brandon, Syrah and Saige; two great grandchildren, Lily and Isabella; two sisters, Rose (Wayne) Fraser, Sydney Mines, Theresa Carroll, North Sydney; one brother, Tommy (Cathy) Baker, Black Rock; sisters-in-law, Kay Baker, North Sydney, June Reid, Scarborough; her aunts, Muriel Jessome, Georges River and Betty Korfman, Conn. USA. Also surviving are a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Joan was predeceased by her husband, Robert George Sproul and by her brother, Jimmy Baker.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Ritter, the nurses and staff of Palliative Care 4West at Northside General Hospital for the care and compassion shown to Joan and the family during this most difficult time.
No visitation by request. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating.
