It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our brother, uncle, grand uncle and friend, Ian Anais MacNeil on Saturday, October 1, 2016. Born in Sydney on May 14, 1953, he was the son of the late John Alex and Sadie (MacMullin) MacNeil of Frenchvale, NS. Ian graduated from Cape Breton Regional Vocational School, electrical program in 1973. He then went on to obtain his Red Seal as an industrial electrician. He worked for over thirty years as a proud member of I.B.E.W. on many construction sites in the Atlantic region as well as in Ontario. Ian was very particular about the work he did and was well respected by his co-workers. Ian loved music and was the life of any party with his guitar and songs. He referred to his unheard of Gaelic renditions as “Metric Gaelic”. Ian was a very sociable guy who made friends wherever he went. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, to dish out free advice and to render many good deeds. Ian is survived by his four brothers, Sandy (Clara), Sydney, Basil (Vida), North Sydney, Joe T. (Linda), Sydney and P.J. (Anne), Lower Sackville; two sisters, Sheila (Archie) Gillis, Frenchvale, Marguerite (Joe) Musgrave, Frenchvale; his twelve nieces; four nephews and eleven grand-nieces and nephews. Ian is also survived by an uncle-in-law, Duncan Cameron of Port Hawkesbury and his cherished girls, Brandy Matheson (McNeill) and Holly McNeill, as well as numerous cousins. Besides his parents, Ian was predeceased by a nephew, Ian Lauchlin Gillis.
Visitation for Ian will be held from 4-9 p.m. on Tuesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church, Frenchvale with Father Paul Abbass officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery in Frenchvale.
