Mary Anderson (Stewart) Waite passed away peacefully at Hospice Fredericton on October 15th, 2016 at the age of 92. Born in Blantyre, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Mary (Currie) Stewart and the wife of the late Wilfred Walter Waite. Her family moved to Glace Bay, NS when Mary was 2 years old. Mary was very proud to be a coal miner’s daughter from Glace Bay. Mary is survived by her three children, Walter (Kathleen),Wilfred (Nancy) and John (Anne) and son-in-law, Dale Hunter all in Fredericton; seven grandchildren, Jennifer McCluskey (Andrew), Christopher Hunter, (Serena), Jessica Waite Higgins (Jonathan), Melissa Waite (Jamie), Robert Waite (Anna), Marianne Waite (Shawn) and Anna Waite (Ryan); great-grandchildren, Abigail Waite, Evelyn Waite, Isabel Waite and Eva McCluskey; one brother, William Stewart (Lestra) of Newfoundland, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mary was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Wilfred and one daughter, Marina Hunter, as well as her sister, Liz Calhoun and brother-in-law, Bill Calhoun of Toronto, Ontario. Mary was the foundation of the family working long hours with Wilfred growing three hospitality businesses in Fredericton, the Eden Rock Hotel, the Skyline Motel and the Fredericton Inn. She was always part of the critical business decisions. In the later years Mary enjoyed travelling especially her many trips to Las Vegas with her daughter, Marina. Mary will be remembered as a loving mother, a special mother-in-law, a caring grandmother and great-grandmother. All that knew her were touched by her humour, kindness, true caring heart, infectious smile and generosity. With the aid of special caregivers, Linda MacNichol, Maggie vanderPloeg, Judith Schlote and Doreen Gaudet, hairstylist, Shelly Parent, the Extra Mural Nurses especially Darleen, together with physicians Dr. Louise Ruest, Dr. Debra Gowan and Dr. Bea Sainz, Mary was able to spend her final years at home surrounded by her family and fond memories with her final hours at Hospice House.
Visitation was held at McAdam’s Funeral Home on October 18, 2016. The Funeral Service was held on October 19, 2016 at Wilmot United Church. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery at a later date. Reception will follow at the Fredericton Inn. For those who wish, memorial tributes in Mary’s memory may be made to Hospice House Fredericton or a charity of your choice.
