Harry Garfield BUCKLAND

Harry Garfield BUCKLAND

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Garfield Buckland, age 76, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on November 3rd, 2016. Born November 30th, 1939 in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Harry was the son of the late William Buckland (Burgeo NFLD) and Ida May Moore. He was a long time resident of Ashby, but also very proud of his Newfoundland roots. He especially enjoyed the music, and felt a true connection with anyone he met from there. For 42 years Harry worked for Ben’s Bakery delivering bread throughout Cape Breton Island. By all accounts he loved his job, and the many people he met along the way. He had a great work ethic and in his opinion, taking a sick day was never an option. For a significant part of his life, Harry along with his late wife, Donna (Fraser), enjoyed socializing, playing cards and staying at the bungalow in Mira. He was a long time executive member of the Elks Club on Bentict street where he worked as a bartender before eventually rising to the position of ”exalted ruler”. For several years he helped coach the Bantam Elks Hockey Teams and spoke fondly of his years as trainer under John Dicker MacDonald and (the late) Adrian Morrison. In the 1960’s Harry’s weekends were mostly spent at the Old Sydney raceway where he, Whylie Mulvihill and Buckie Sives, teamed up to make car number 45 one of the more competitive of that era. After he retired Harry continued his interest in stock cars by sponsoring car # 27 and offering expertise to his good friend and neighbor Gary MacDonald and his son Vance. Our father was an avid outdoorsman who relished any and all conversation relating to fishing and hunting. Harry had many good friends in Bateston and each fall meant a return to St Peters where he and his brother Gerry would hunt by day and drink by night. Harry is predeceased by his wife, Donna Marie Buckland (1999); his son Craig (Donna) and daughter, Paula (James) Doran, Halifax, as well as 4 grandchildren, (Carlin, Katie, Rita, Cecilia), his brother, Gerry (Rosie) as well as numerous cousins. Besides his parents Harry was predeceased by his brother, Sonny (Ira) Buckland and a half-brother, Will. We the family would like to thank Dr. Greg Myatt for his many years of care and compassion, Cape Breton County Homemakers for allowing my father to enjoy several years at home alone, and especially the devoted staff at Miner’s Lane (Harborstone). Cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held Monday, November 7th from 7 P.M. - 9 p.m. at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St, Sydney. A memorial service will be held 2 pm Tuesday, November 8, 2016 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. A reception to follow.
“And thus I conclude with a wish you go well,
Sweet be your dreams, may your happiness swell,
I'll leave you here, for my journey begins,
I'm going to be with them, going to be with them,
I'm going to be with them again.”
