BEST, Carl MacKinnon – age 90, of Cambridge and former long-time resident of Waterville. Kings Co., passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at home. The village of Waterville has lost one of its oldest and “Best” citizens. Born on August 28, 1926, in Waterville, just before the great depression, he was a son of the late Eugene R. and Ina F. (Power) Best. Carl, during his prime was considered the best softball pitcher in the Annapolis Valley. He was inducted into the Berwick Sports Hall of Fame as an athlete and twice more as a team member of the Waterville Mohawks and Cambridge Red and Whites. Carl was a proud citizen of Waterville for 89 of his 90 years. He was a veteran member of the Waterville & District Volunteer Fire Department with 32 years of service. Carl was a founding member and former secretary/treasurer of the Waterville Recreation Club, active member of the Waterville Field Days Committee, member and former President of the Waterville Cemetery Committee. He had been a member of several church choirs including the Waterville Eight, who performed throughout the Annapolis Valley and beyond. Carl was a well-known soloist, who sang at many events including weddings and funerals in the area. He was a true gentleman who would always shake your hand. Carl was a generous, kind person and was devoted to his family and community. He worked in sales and service for many years with C. M. Cook Ltd, Hiltz Bros and Sears Canada. Surviving are his devoted and loving wife of 64 years, the former Barbara M. Bickerton; son, Colin (Mardi Burton) Best, Waterville; grandchildren, Megan Best, Jessie Best (Matt Fraser), Kelsey (Jonathan Bowen) Best, Deidre and Brandon Best; great-grandchildren, Brielle and Liston; niece, Linda (Jim) Lowther, Halifax and many Bickerton family members. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by son, Carman Best; sister, Hazel Best; brother, Graham (Evelyn) Best. There will be no visitation. All are welcome to attend a service and time of reception in celebration of Carl’s life that will take place 2 p.m., Sunday, November 27, in the Waterville & District Volunteer Fire Department Cornwallis Square Village Hall, 1415 County Home Rd., Cambridge. Rev. Tom Woods officiating, with interment in the Berwick Cemetery, at a later date. Family flowers only, donations in Carl’s memory may be made to the Waterville Cemetery Committee (payable to Trinity United Church, Waterville) or Carey Me Fund – Supporting Palliative Care in the Home.
