It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Dorothy Gertrude Mackie, on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at the Glace Bay Hospital, with her children by her side.
Born in Dominion on July 31, 1936, she was the daughter of the late William Robert and Charlotte Agatha (Fortune) Windsor.
Mom was a lifelong resident of Union Street in Dominion and for the past 5 years resided at Kennedy Seniors Complex.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Cornelius (Neil) Mackie on September 12, 1979; her brother, Robert (Buzz) of Stellarton in December, 2015 one brother and one sister in infancy and her first granddaughter at birth, Melissa Dawn Edmond on September 5, 1983.
As a young widow, mom faced the challenge of supporting and raising their 5 children on her own. Following dad's death, she became self employed as a domestic cleaner and interior decorator, working throughout industrial Cape Breton. She was also employed with Cape Care for a short time and provided private home care.
Mom was a well-known volunteer throughout Cape Breton. She raised awareness for such organizations as the physically and mentally challenged, working tirelessly on their behalf. She taught adult sign language classes for 12 years at various schools and Marconi Campus. She was recognized by the Income Tax Program for her volunteer services for over 25 years. She was a Cape Breton representative for Recreation Nova Scotia and a community representative for National Access Awareness Week, receiving the Hourglass Award. Having a hearing impaired daughter from birth, mom was one of the founding members of the Cape Breton Parents Society for Hearing Impaired. She was a former President of the Nova Scotia Council on Deafness and Coordinating Council of Deafness. She served as co-chair in the 1st year of National Access Awareness Week and was a Cape Breton representative for 5 years. Mom also completed the Face to Face Program under NAAW. She was actively involved with the newly formed Concerned Citizens Committee for public transit for the physically challenged in Cape Breton.
Whenever mom had some spare time, she would be sitting at her sewing machine, making clothing for her children, hemming pants and dresses for our neighbors and sewing aprons, tablecloths, baby quilts and table runners and more for the annual St Eugene's Church CWL Tea and Sale.
Mom's favorite time of year was xmas eve when all of her family gathered together. She loved seeing the excited faces on grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they opened their presents. She also looked forward to the many bus trips to the USA that she took with her daughters.
Mom is survived her children, Gerald (Mary), Donna (Michael Corrigan), Brian (Kim) all of Dominion, Dorothy (Kevin Edmond), Glace bay and Colleen, Dartmouth.
