It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Greta ‘Rita’ (MacGibbon) Gambel, 91, on December 15, 2016 in her home in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Born on August 12, 1925 in Sydney, Cape Breton, Greta was the daughter of Alexander and Kathleen (Matheson) MacGibbon. She was a member on Westminister Bible Presbyterian Church and worked at IGA Grocery. Greta was a loving wife and survived by her husband of 52 years, Merle Gambel, United States, Navy Retired; a loving mother to daughters, Karen (Henry) Johnston, Coxheath, Donna Self, Fredericksburg, Virginia, Debra (Michael) Hannam, Alexandria, Virginia and a loving ‘Ba’ to her six grandchildren, Kelly, Sherry, Alex, Bretton, Noah and Greta ‘Emmy’. Greta was predeceased by her brother, Nelson MacGibbon and sister, Pearl Hayes. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Jimmy Hayes and sister-in-law, Georgie MacGibbon. A service was held on December 21, 2016 at Spotswood Baptist Church where she and Merle were longtime members. Interment was in Quantico National Cemetery, Virginia. Greta was devoted to her family and had a special place in her heart for children. She was young at heart and was always looking for a reason to smile. Memorial donations can be made to The Child Life Program of the IWK Children's Hospital in Nova Scotia.
