Jean Waschuk was born at Wakaw, SK. March 23, 1928. Her dad taught at country schools in Wakaw area so she attended school wherever he was teaching until high school when the family moved into Wakaw. After graduating from Saskatoon Business College, she worked as a legal secretary for several years in Saskatoon. She met Cliff Murch when he was attending U of S. They married March 24, 1951 and moved to the farm south of Lancer. Jean joined the Women's Association of the United Church, taught Sunday School and was on the Official Board of the church. She was secretary for the Lancer Rural Telephone Company for eight years. In 1966 Jean represented the Lancer Home and School Association at an organizational meeting in Swift Current for a Regional Library system in Southwest SK. In 1967 Jean chaired the Steering Committee that issued a proposal to the provincial government that the Chinook Regional Library be established. In 1971 the provincial government established a regional library for southwest SK, headquarters in Swift Current. In 1973 she became chair of the Executive Committee, remaining in that positon until 1985. She represented the R.M. of Miry Creek on the board of Chinook Regional Library. In 1979 she was appointed to represent Chinook Regional Library on the Executive of the Library Trustees' Association. She was appointed director to the SaskMedia board at its inception in 1975-78. Jean was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion, Abbey Branch. She and Cliff worked with Lancer Museum, attending museum association meetings and maintaining those connections. She was an integral part of Lancer Chokecherry Festival. Mom chaired the Miry Creek and Area History Book Committee and was editor for the 2 volume History Book in 2000. Mom enjoyed growing a large vegetable garden and had a greenhouse that produced plants for all of us. She enjoyed crafts, especially if the granddaughters and extended family shared in the projects. Cliff passed away in 2008. Jean remained on the farm until September, 2016. This past Christmas, we extended the tables to accommodate 28 family members. Mom was a wonderful cook. Often people would stop in for an afternoon visit and be invited to stay for supper. The cookie jar was always full, anticipating visits from friends, grandkids and great grandkids. In October, 2016, Mom became a resident of the Prairie Health Care Centre. She enjoyed friends there and always appreciated visits from family and friends.
