New Glasgow - George Peter Green, 1926-2017. Peter Green, 90, passed away at home on Sunday, January 15, 2017.
Born and raised in New Glasgow, he was the son of John William Green and Alice (Fraser) Green.
He is survived by and leaves to mourn, his wife and best friend of 25 years, Darlene (Abbass) Green, his daughter, Susan (Clarke Logan) Green, New Glasgow, son, Peter David (Cynthia Horton), Yellowknife, NT, step-daughter Kerri (Gordon Fowler), Lower Coverdale, NB, step-son, Gregory (Colleen Zajac) Gaskin, Sutton, MA, sister, Jeanne Jardine, Abercrombie, brother-in-law, Fr. Paul Abbass, Frenchvale, NS., sister-in-law, Louise Irving, Saint John, NB, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two nieces, and a nephew.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Mary B. (Young) Green and his brother, Fraser Ballam Green.
Peter had an incredible zest for life and a lifelong love of learning. A graduate of New Glasgow High School, Peter received his BA and B.Ed. from Acadia University, his MA from St. F.X. and a Diploma in Administration from Dalhousie.
Peter taught Math, Physics and Chemistry at East Pictou, Trenton, and Stellarton High Schools. He was Principal of Trenton and Stellarton High Schools and, at the time of his retirement, was Superintendent in Stellarton. He loved teaching and thoroughly enjoyed meeting former students.
For 61 years, Peter was an active member and past Grand Master of Euclid No. 92 and recently Albion No. 5 Masonic Lodges.
After retirement from academic life, Peter worked as a real estate agent for M.B. Green Realty retiring for a second time at age 70.
Peter was genuinely interested in people and loved a good conversation. He had been an avid skater and skier. An excellent gardener, he was always most proud of his potatoes. In earlier years, he was excited to referee the Harlem Globe Trotters at the New Glasgow Arena. He formerly served on the Council for the Town of New Glasgow and for a time as Deputy Mayor. He also sat on the Board of Directors of the Nova Scotia Research Council.
As a young man, he was 2nd Lieutenant in the ROTC and spent many summers at Aldershot. A terrific athlete, he played on his high school and University basketball teams and played rugby at Acadia. Peter was a world traveler and a voracious reader. A constant student as well as teacher, he had been studying Gaelic for the past 12 years and had spent many hours learning other languages as well.
Arrangements under the auspices of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow, with visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Wednesday, January 18th. Masonic service will take place at 6:30 pm, on Wednesday. A celebration of Peter’s life will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at 1 pm, Thursday, January 19th with Rev. Dr. Joon Ki Kim and Rev. Dr. Fr. Paul J. Abbass officiating. Burial will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
