Age 76 years
With broken hearts we announce our Dad's passing after a lengthy cardiac illness at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland. Allen was born in Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia. He was the eldest son of Harold and Alberta (Behie) Conrod who he joins, with our little sister. Allen was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He retired in July 1990 after 30 years of service. He was posted in several communities in Newfoundland and Labrador. His first posting was at Parliament Hill, Ottawa, Ontario, followed by postings in St. John's, Bonavista, Springdale, Nain, Corner Brook, Burin and lastly Grand Bank. After spending the majority of his service on the Burin Peninsula, a place he considered his second home and often spoke fondly of the people he worked with there, the communities he served, and the friendships he made. He loved and wore the uniform with pride, getting out to meet the people of all communities, treating everyone the same, regardless of their station in life. Allen, like his late father Harold, was a member of the Masonic Lodge and rose to the position of Master in the year of 1986 in Burin, Newfoundland. He has many lifelong, dear friends within this brotherhood. Allen was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed nature. He spent his retirement years raising several types of animals on hobby farms both in Fortune and Blaketown. His 27-year-old Newfoundland/Shetland pony, Jack, will also miss his presence. He was known as a gentle giant with a huge, giving heart, never expecting anything in return, a wonderful Dad, brother, companion, teacher and friend and was known as Mr. Clean, Conrad and Papa Bear to only name a few. He was loved by so many and will be missed beyond measure. Allen was the proud father of his children; Sharon (Bruce Cluett) with children Stephen and Nicholas; Sandra with children Marcus and Gavin; Stephen (Tammy) with children Allison and Spencer; Susan (Danny Duplechian) with grand-dog Reed and their mother and grandmother Joyce Conrod. He is survived by his brothers Daniel (Dorothy), Samuel (Wilma), Harold Keith (Raina) and sister Karen as well as nieces and nephews. He spent many wonderful years with his companion Ann Jerrett and her children Angela (Geoff Legge) with children; Amelia and Charlotte; Tina (Jerry) with child Colin; Jason (Carolyn) with children Nathan and Brooklyn and Jeffery (Melissa) in Cavendish, Newfoundland. Many special accolades to Dr. Jaime Farrell and the nursing and medical staff of 4SA Health Sciences Centre. He thought so fondly of you all. Reverend Scott Parsons, George Powell (Chaplain R.C.M.P. Vet) and longtime childhood friend Archbishop Martin Currie, whose unwavering faith, spiritual guidance and strength gave him the greatest peace from them all. Thank you to all who visited during his hospitalization. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Carnell's Funeral Home on Thursday, January 19, 2017 from 2-9 pm. Funeral service will be held on July 15, 2017 at the United Church in Collin's Cove, Newfoundland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in his memory, but is not necessary. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Warren's Funeral Home, Dildo.
