John Stuart Dyck passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at the age of 82 years. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Justine Dyck; step-mother, Margaret Dyck (Klassen); brothers, Wilbert Dyck and Alden Dyck; sisters-in-law, Helen Dyck and Ann Dyck; brothers in law, Wilfred Schapansky and Leonard Giesbrecht and nephews, Robert Dyck and Ken Dyck. John was born on the family farm outside of Herbert, Saskatchewan on October 2, 1934. He grew up here on the farm and worked alongside his father and brothers. At the age of 15 he began working at several other farms and then moved onto working for a number of Rural Municipalities. John married the love of his life, Miriam Schapansky, on October 12, 1958 at the Mennonite Conference Church in Herbert, Saskatchewan. Together they built their first home in Herbert and had three children, Sheryl, Blaine and Melody. John and Mirian later moved to Swift Current where their fourth child, Tavia was born. John’s passion for working on machinery grew to heavy duty equipment maintenance while working construction on Saskatchewan highways. In 1975 the family moved to Fort Qu’Appelle where he continued to work for Sanderson Construction. In 1981 the family moved for the last time to McTaggart, Saskatchewan. John worked for Giroux Concrete for a number of years and then finally joined Red Head Equipment until his retirement in 2000. He was well known for his expertise and knowledge of machinery and parts and was nicknamed “Diesel Doctor.” In 1982 John ran for councillor of McTaggart and he held this position until 1985 when he ran for Mayor and succeeded. He held this position for the next 27 years until retiring from it in 2012. John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Miriam Dyck; daughter, Sheryl (Gordon) Shiplack; son, Blaine (Shelley) Dyck; daughter, Melody (Jim) Bull; daughter, Tavia Dyck (Darren Swanson); grandchildren: Steven Shiplack, Jason Shiplack (Jennifer Waggoner), Cody Dyck, Jenna Dyck, Angela Dyck, Colton Dyck, Kaitlyn Brodziak, Jaileen Brodziak, Matthew Bull, Jessica Bull; Nathan Hallberg, Jorja Hallberg; great grandchildren, James Thiessen (Shiplack), Alayna Shiplack, Hutton Johnson (Shiplack), Kayson Shiplack, Lexton Shiplack and Aedan Waggoner; brothers, Elmer Dyck and Vernon Dyck; sister, Leona Giesbrecht as well as numerous nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law. The family of John would like to thank the staff at Weyburn General Hospital for the care he received in his final journey. At the request of John, there will be a private Memorial Service and Interment in Herbert, Saskatchewan at a later date.
