The family of Harriet McKenzie, 89, Glace Bay, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, regrets to announce her death which occurred on Saturday, January 28th, 2017 at the Glace Bay Hospital surrounded by family. Born in Glace Bay on November 6, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Irene (Brown) MacQuarrie.
She was a stay at home Mom and her family was central in her life. Up until the past few years she loved to cook and bake, especially chocolate cakes and ‘air buns’. For many years she was a faithful member of Newsome United Church and a past member of the UCW. In her later years, she enjoyed the company of visitors, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her three children, Judy (Doug) Lawrence, Port Morien, Kevin (Dianne) Westville and Keith (Jennifer) Dartmouth. Also surviving are her five cherished grandchildren, Ryan (Adele), Mark (Meaghan), Kyle, Nicole (Mitch) and Gillian (Cody). She was the proud great grandmother of three precious great grandchildren, Brenna and Zachary Lawrence and Lainey Carrigan. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Sue MacQuarrie, Glace Bay and Verda Strong, Toronto; also several nieces, nephews and friends, including her good friend, Barb Morrison. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Neil ‘Bud’ McKenzie in 2012; her sister, Margaret MacDonald; brothers, Allan, Bernie and Daniel (in infancy); sister-in-law, Mimi Taylor; brother-in-law, Fred (Late Millie) McKenzie, Tom MacDonald, Hugh ‘Bunny’ McKenzie and nephew, Tommy MacDonald.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home 71 Union St, Glace Bay. Visitation will take place on Tuesday January 31, 2017 from 1-3 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home with service to follow at 3 p.m. in Patten Chapel, burial to take place at a later date in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. The family wishes to thank staff of Seaview Manor where she was a resident since December, for their compassionate care; Dr. David Ley and staff; the New Waterford Homemakers, VON, EHS and the staff of the ER at the Glace Bay Hospital, for their excellent care during a difficult time.
We would also like to acknowledge her former neighbor, the late Heather Turner, whose kindness will always be remembered.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke Foundation, the Alzheimers Association or a charity of one’s choice.
