New Glasgow - Rachael Emily Harquail, passed away peacefully Monday, January 30, 2017 at the Aberdeen Hospital surrounded by her children.
Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, she was a daughter of the late Alexander “Alec” and Jennie (MacPhee) MacSween.
She was a graduate of Glace Bay General School of Nursing ‘52 and Post-Graduate OR at the Halifax Infirmary.
Rachael was a long-time member of the Saint Vincent DePaul Society, and a member of the Inter Parish choirs and choirs of Our Lady of Lourdes and Saint Gregory’s Church and was a lecturer for many years at daily mass at Our Lady of Lourdes. She was an avid volunteer with the Pictou County Food Bank and the Aberdeen Hospital Gift Shop for over 25 years. She was also a member of the Sir Frederick Banting Chapter, I.O.D.E. for as many years.
Rachael was predeceased by her brother Alexander “Acky” MacSween.
She is survived by children, Dalyce (Dr. Douglas) Keeling, Rothesay, NB, Jennie Harquail (Andy MacGregor), New Glasgow, NS, and David Harquail (Cathy Hunter), Cole Harbour, NS. Nanny will be missed by grandchildren, Dr. Alexis Keeling (Kevin Sweezey), Moncton, NB, Kaley Keeling, Rothesay, NB; niece, Margaret Ann MacFarlane-Leil (Allison Leil), New Glasgow, NS; and her sisters, Annie MacSween and Mary MacFarlane of Sydney, NS. She will be missed by her grand-dogs Chantay and Millie.
Rachael’s first love was her family to whom she devoted her entire life.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 pm Thursday, February 2, 2017 at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow, NS. Funeral service will be held Friday, February 3, 2017, 12pm at Saint John the Baptist in New Glasgow, NS. Interment will be in Sydney at a later date.
