It is with great sadness that the family of Donald “Whip” Whalen announce that he passed away suddenly on Friday, January 20 at his home in Riverview, one week prior to his 90th birthday. Born in Sault St. Marie, Ontario in 1927, Whip moved to Sydney from Saint John in 1947 to play hockey for the Sydney Millionaires where he met his wife of 63 years, the former Bertilla MacDonald.
He was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 as a member of the 1948 Sydney Millionaires team that won the Maritime championship title and went on to play for the Allan Cup against the Toronto Marlboros at Maple Leaf Gardens.
After an injury ended his hockey career, Whip went to work for the Cape Breton Post in Sydney. After retirement, he and Bertilla enjoyed travelling the world from Florida, to Spain to Mexico but always returning to Margaree Forks to spend time fishing the Margaree River, golfing in Cheticamp and spending time with family.
He will be missed by his children, Mike (Connie) Groves Point, Joe (Paul), Chelsea, Que, Darlyne, Moncton, Alfie (Sylvia), Eastern Passage; his grandchildren Troy (Emily), Calgary, Kirk (Kelly), Calgary; Devin (Jessie) Toronto; Jason Power (Laura), Saint John; Aaron Power, Moncton; Kayla (Sean), Coles Harbour; his great grandchildren, Tavin, Calgary, Oliver, Cole Harbor and Essen and Lochlan Toronto.
Cremation has taken place. Private memorial service will take place at a later date.
