Christena MacGibbon Menzies

Christena MacGibbon Menzies

Date de naissance : 25 octobre 1922

Date de décès : 21 février 2017

Christena MacGibbon Menzies was born on October 25, 1922, to the late Alexander MacGibbon and Margaret (Morrison) MacGibbon Killam. She died peacefully on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, while living at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 72 years, David Menzies on August 1, 2013. She is survived by their three daughters and their families, Florence and Dale Griffin of Fremont, California, Helena and Gord Bugden of Peterborough, Ont., and Trisha and Greg Campbell of Pt. Elgin, Ont. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Also predeceasing her were their two sons, David Alexander in 1951 and Frederick Richard in 1996; her brother, John MacGibbon and wife, Marjorie (Coombs) MacGibbon Ball; sister, Isabel (MacGibbon) and husband, Tom Campbell; stepfather, Benjamin Killam and his children, Paul, Bruce and Lynwood Killam, Lucy Morrison, Irene McSween, Faith Loughery and Enid Hicks; in-laws, Fred and Helene (Grezel) Menzies, Dolly (Menzies) and Walter Judge of Halifax and their sons, Wally and Doug. A lifelong Cape Bretoner, Tena grew up in the Pier and always fondly remembered her young years spent in that area. She was a homemaker and her main focus was on supporting her husband and raising her children. She loved to bake and many friends will remember enjoying the delicious ‘sweets’ she baked and shared with others. Reading, playing cards and knitting were also favorite activities. She and Dave played golf at Lingan well into their 80s, and after Dave retired, they spent the winter months, for many years, in Florida so they could golf year round. She and Dave were active members of their congregations and rarely missed Sunday services, even after moving into The Cove. Tena was always an active participant in Women’s Guilds in the United Church of Canada, and was a life member of UCW.
A memorial service and interment will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Building Fund of United Church, Sydney River or the Cove Auxiliary would be appreciated. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers of the Cove for their excellent care and compassion. A special thank you also to Chrissie MacLeod and Arlene Canning whose many kindnesses and care enriched our Mother’s final days and gave comfort and support to our family.
Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
