It is with deep sorrow and regret that we announce the completion of Sam Stickland's life journey. Samuel Philip Stickland of Mount Pearl, NL, age 86, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, March 6, 2017. Predeceased by his parents Philip and Sarah (nee Oxford); loving wife of 56 years Betty (nee Chapman); daughter Linda Marie Harty; sisters: Ruby Bulbrook, Naomi Courtney, Amelia Strickland, and Betty Buffett. Leaving to mourn, his daughter Sheila (Sheri McConnell), son David, two loving granddaughters: Caitlin Harty and Delphine Stickland, sister Laura (Fred Strickland), numerous nieces and nephews, a large circle of friends and colleagues, and the woman who brought sunshine into his last years, Minnie Randell. Sam was born in Rencontre West, NL on January 27, 1931. He had a long and fulfilling career as a teacher, lay minister, wireless operator, and administrator, ending his rich career as the manager of labour relations for NL Hydro. Sam generously gave his time and energy to the communities he called home in his beloved Newfoundland and Labrador. He was a loyal and dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge and the Grand Lodge of Newfoundland Labrador (English Constitution), and lived his life following the guiding principles of Free Masonry. Sam was a gentleman in every sense of the word, and he made this world a better place for all who knew him. The family would like to offer special thanks to the staff, Dr. Essaji, and residents of Hillcrest Estates; Dr. Greenland and Suzie; and Dr. French. Visitation will be held at Barrett's Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Ave., Mt. Pearl on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, March 9, 2017 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 10, 2017 at 11 a.m. from the Parish of The Ascension. Interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road. Memorial donations may be made in Sam's memory to the Dr. H Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation or a charity of your choice.
