Obituary
CLAUDE PORTER
December 24, 1934 – March 16, 2017

On March 16, 2017 our lives were forever changed when our loving husband, father grandfather, brother and friend Claude Porter, aged 82 years passed away at home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Claude or 'Porter' as many called him was one of the pioneers of the growing community of MacDougall’s beach where he established Porters Peak in 1965 (51 years). "The country" was his favourite place on earth to be where he took pride in tending his gardens, especially his tomatoes. Born at Fox Island, Claude was the son of the late Lewis and Elizabeth Porter, who first moved to Port Aux Basques in 1937. He was predeceased by his sister Maude Lushman (Jake), brothers; Gilbert Porter (Priscilla), Cecil Porter, Frank Porter (Ann); Brothers in law William Devoy, Max Dutot, Charlie Dutot (Nancy), Bill Dutot (Mabel). He leaves to mourn with many fond and loving memories his devoted wife and dedicated caregiver Gladys (Dutot) of 59 years, his only son Jim Porter (Heather) of Port aux Basques, his only daughter Michelle (Maurice) Rumbolt of Stephenville. Claude was very proud of his children. He will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren; Kyla Porter, Kelsey Porter, Angela Clevett (Stephen) and precious great granddaughter Charley. He will forever remain in the hearts of his sister Leona Billard (Robert) of Oakville, ON, brother Allan (Classie) Porter of Halifax NS, sisters in law; Alma Porter, Norma Dutot, Margaret Devoy, brothers in law Dan Dutot (Marilyn) David Dutot all of Port aux Basques and a large circle of nieces, nephews and many friends. Most people in Port aux Basques will remember Claude as the imperial oilman as he delivered oil to their homes in all sorts of weather. Over the years Claude was a member of the Rangers, dart teams, and the 50 plus community. In keeping with in his wishes cremation has taken place, there will be no formal visitation and internment will follow at a later date. However there will be a memorial on March 22, 2017 at the fire hall in Port aux Basques from 2-5 pm. The family will be celebrating Claude's life at this time and it is open to the public. Funeral arrangements were in the care of East Haven Funeral Home Inc., 57 Grand Bay Road, Port aux Basques, 695-2300.www.easthavenfuneralhome.com
