Jean MacKenzie
Jean MacKenzie was born on August 9, 1917 in Lipton, Sask. She passed away at Sunnyside Nursing Home in Saskatoon on April 28, 2017. She was educated in Saskatoon and Vancouver where she received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degree from the University of B.C. and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Sask. She taught mainly English in Prince Albert high schools from 1949 to 1976. During most of those years, she supervised the Drama Club, guiding student directors. She was active in the Sask. English Teacher's Association and worked on the English Curriculum Committee for Div. IV. For five years, she chaired the editorial board of The Bulletin and The Arbos, publications of the Sask. Teachers' Federation. In 1949, she joined the Prince Albert University Women's Club and the Canadian Club, later compiling the 60 - year history of each club. She was an enthusiastic member of the Toastmistress Club for it's 27 years of existence in Prince Albert. For 14 years, she was elected to the board of directors of the Prince Albert Metis - Friendship Centre. For the Prince Albert Drama Group, she wrote and directed the 1966 Centenary Extravaganza, "Hail to Prince Albert." After her retirement she served on boards on the Status of Women: the Sask. Action Committee, the National Action Committee, the Sask. Advisory Council, and the Sask. Coalition for Women's Pensions. For many years, Jean and her sister, the Saskatoon artist, Grace Hogg, showed their slides of the many places they had visited: Australia, South and Central America, Madeira, Bermuda, etc. Latterly, Jean has been a board member of the Sask. Committee for Death with Dignity. In April, 1999, Nature Sask. published her first book of poems, An Exaltation of Birds. And in July 2002, her second book of poems, The Exhilaration of Flowers. Many thanks to Sunnyside Nursing Home for their care and caring for Jean and thanks to Wayne for his faithful weekly phone calls. There will be no memorial service as per her request.
