ARTHUR WILFRED (WILF) CURREN

Arthur Wilfred Curren (Wilf) passed peacefully away with his wife Sheila and his son Richard at his side on Friday, May 12, 2017 at Inglewood Care Centre in West Vancouver BC. Wilf was the son of Leah and Wallace Curren and was born at St. John's NL on November 30, 1932. He graduated from McGill University in 1955, with a degree in mechanical engineering and was employed at Bowaters Pulp & Paper Mill in Corner Brook NL until 1963, when he and his wife emigrated to the United States and settled in San Francisco CA, where their three children were born.

In 1978, after several moves, the family finally settled in Houston TX, where in 1981 Wilf was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Wilf's determined battle against Parkinson's would define the last 36 years of his life. The debilitating effects of the disease forced him into early retirement and inspired him to fight back through a combination of progressive weight training and meticulous medication management. He documented his battles with Parkinson's, the medical establishment and the government in his book "Dumb Bells & Dopamine: A Parkinson's Success Story." The serious topic is tempered with gentle humour and shows Wilf's gift for writing.

We will miss him.

The family is grateful to Dr. Peter J. Schwarz and the staff at West Vancouver Care Centre and to Dr. Richard Sebba and the staff at Inglewood Care Centre for their constant and gentle care of Wilf throughout his last years.

Wilf is survived by his wife, Sheila, children: Catherine (Hans) Adler, Quilcene WA, Carol (Andre) Kroeger, Regina SK and Richard (Megan) Curren, North Vancouver BC; grandchildren: Matthew and Peter Adler, and Tomas and Niklas Kroeger; his sister Anna Curren, San Diego, his brother Thomas Rendell Curran, Ottawa, and two nieces: Kristina (Jim), Peterborough and Meredith (Eric), Ottawa.
