Elizabeth Amelia ‘Leben’ Vance, of Valleyview Home, St. Thomas, Ont., on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at her late residence, in her 88th, year. Beloved wife of the late Michael John Makichuk (killed overseas) and the late Leander St. Clair Vance. Dearly loved mother of Michele and her husband Wesley Bateman, of Alberta; Darlene Vance, of St. Thomas; Kevin and his wife Debra Vance, of Florida; Christopher Vance, of London; and the late Anthony ‘Tony’ Makichuk. Dear sister of Audrey Close, Joan Reid, and Gwen and her husband Donald McKay, all of Nova Scotia. She was predeceased by a sister Shirley. Sadly missed by six grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Elizabeth was born in Masstown, N.S., on Nov. 10, 1920, the daughter of the late Leo and Winnifred (Smith) Leben. She lived in St. Thomas from 1960-1981, and then in Nova Scotia, and returned to St. Thomas in 2001. She had worked at Elgin Manor and the St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital. She served overseas with the W.A.C. Visitation will be held 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, and a Legion Tribute Service, 7 p.m. Tuesday, conducted by Branch #26 of the Royal Canadian Legion Truro, funeral service 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, all in the Mattatall Funeral Home, 55 Young St., Truro, Rev. Dan Gunn officiating, with a reception to follow in the funeral home. Interment to be held at a later date in the Plains Road Cemetery, Debert. Flowers gratefully declined.
