Marie Penney
Passed away comfortably and in the company of her daughter and son-in-law in Ottawa, after more than decade-long struggle with Alzheimer's disease, Marie Penney, aged 76 years, formerly of St. John's. Marie was wife to Stanley, mother and mother-in-law to Joan and Peter Strong, and grandmother to her beloved grandson Kyle. She was also sister and sister-in-law to Audrey and Willis McCabe, Max and Florence Vincent, Lucy and Hugh Bennett, Doris and John Boland, Robert and Blanche Penney, and Shirley and Edward Kean. She leaves a large circle of other relatives and close friends, particularly Esther and Jeanie Buckley, all of whom have through their kindness and faithful friendship made Marie's journey a gentle path. Special thanks to the staff and residents of Margaret's Manor for their extraordinary compassion and care. They were Marie's angels throughout the progression of her illness and she often said she could be no happier anywhere than with them. We were blessed to have the guidance and encouragement of Dr. Strong and Dr. Martins at the Miller Centre — they were pillars of strength in very difficult times. Thanks also to the staff at Saint Luke's Home for their commitment and constant support of our family, and to the staff at the New Orchard Lodge in Ottawa, who became another family for Marie in their warmth, outlook and laughter. According to Marie's wishes, cremation has taken place. Funeral services in St. John's will be announced later in the summer. In lieu of flowers, donations to Iris Kirby House (196 Waterford Bridge Rd. St. John's, N.L., A1E 1E2) or the Newfoundland SPCA (P.O. Box 1533 St. John's, N.L., A1C 5N8) gratefully accepted at Marie's longtime specific request. Condolences may be sent to the family at joan.strong@ocdsb.ca or the Strong family, 8 Bon Echo Crescent, Kanata, Ontario, K2M 2W5."In sorrow we must go, but not in despair. Behold, we are not bound forever to the circles of the world, and beyond them is more than memory. Farewell."— J.R.R. Tolkien
