A.A. 'Archie' Gillis
Passed on: January 19th, 2008
Archibald (“Archie”) Alexander Gillis – 95, Pictou, passed away peacefully, at home, with his family by his side on Saturday, January 19, 2008. Archie was born and raised in Upper Montague, PEI, where he learned his love for carpentry, gardening and family. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, being predeceased by his parents, Alec and Mary, and his siblings: Don, Roy, Jack, Bill, Sadie and Gordon. He met and married his beloved wife, Anne (Cameron), in Charlottetown, and enjoyed 57 years of marriage until her death in 1997. Archie’s lifelong career with Robin Hood Flour took him to Nova Scotia and provided him enduring friendships with both coworkers and customers. Those who knew him often said, “You’ll never meet a finer man.” Agreeing wholeheartedly with that sentiment are those of us who were blessed to have this caring, smart, patient man as an integral part of our lives. Surviving are those who called him Dad: Dorothy and James MacConnell, and Gordon and Rose Gillis; those who called him Grampie: Diane (MacConnell) and Arnold Cameron, Kim (MacConnell) and Greg Duncan, Nancy (MacConnell) and Charles Maxner, Susan MacConnell and Troy MacDonald, and Gordon and Michelle Gillis; and, finally, those who called him Grampie Archie: Katelyn & Sam Cameron, Hannah & Danielle Duncan, Grace, Cal, Meg and Jesse Maxner, Skye, Avery and Rory MacDonald, and Gordie Gillis. At Archie’s request, there will be no visitation, but the family will host a reception after his funeral on Wednesday, January 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Pictou. Donations in Archie’s name may be made to the Canadian Bible Society, the Scotsburn Bethel Presbyterian Christian Education Permanent Fund, or a charity of your choice. At the end of his 95 years, Archie was blessed to have one of his favourite people, Dr. Gerry Farrell, by his side, as well as the compassionate care of the VON nurses and palliative care workers. To remember him best, be kind to others and take time to enjoy the people you love. Arrangements are under the direction of McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou.
