Alice Isabelle Shakness

STELLARTON/HAMILTON, Ont. - Alice Isabelle Shakness, 89, passed away on June 14, 2007, in Braeside Home for Special Care, Middle Musquodoboit. Born in Stellarton, she was a daughter of the late John and Barbara (Nausedaite) Shakness. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In 1939, Alice graduated from Teachers' College in Truro, and began her career teaching in one-room schools in Pictou County before moving on to Stellarton, where she taught until 1960. She then went to Hamilton, Ont., with the Hamilton/Wentworth School Board, where she was employed until her retirement in 1982. In 2001, Alice moved to Musquodoboit Harbour to be near her niece, Barbara Keeble. Outside of teaching, her passions were music, dancing and beautiful dresses. Alice is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, John Chikness, sisters: Theresa Treffler, Rose Murphy, Anne Isenor, Nellie Shakness and Helen Davis. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Co-operative, Upper Musquodoboit. Funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 20, at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Stellarton, with Father Francis Cameron officiating. Burial to follow in the church cemetery.
