Alvin Pettipas

NEW GLASGOW - Alvin Pettipas, 85, of the Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, formerly of 36 Marie Street, Lourdes, passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2007, in the manor. Born in Trenton, he was a son of the late James Walter and Mary Edna (Benoit) Pettipas. He was a resident of the Glen Haven manor for the past year having been a resident of Lourdes for some 61 years where he was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church and the Men's Choir. He was a retired employee of the former Hawker Siddeley, where he worked for some 45 years. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society and the Heritage Choral Group. He had started the Men's Senior Softball League in Lourdes as well, Alvin coached the Merigomish Raiders in the Thorburn Gentleman's Hockey league. Alvin was a very devoted family man, having been kind and considerate to his own children and the neighbourhood kids as well. He drove his six girls to many singing events and festivals and his boys to many hockey games and tournaments all over the province. He organized many sporting events in the community and was instrumental in the creation of the Lourdes Ballfield. Dad was a man who loved to fix and mend things. He refinished furniture and loved to putter around, always creating wooden toys and cutting out pieces. He was also an avid fisherman. He is survived by his wife, the former Evelyn Lipton, Lourdes; sons: David (Janet), Lourdes; John (Anne), Dartmouth; Bernard (Jennifer) Dartmouth; Gerald (Cindy) Dartmouth; Michael, Charlottetown; Richard (Vicky), Summerside; daughters, Marie (Allan) Fraser, Truro; Rosalie Hafey, Trenton; Arlene (Kendall) Higgins, Rothesay, NB; Alma (John) Kyle, Stellarton; Rita (Stirling) MacDonald, Black Point; Cathy (Alan) Turnbull, Cairo, Egypt; 32 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother Charles "Chuck" Pettipas, Trenton; a sister, Rita Ryan, Truro. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Elizabeth; a grandson, Gregory Fraser; brothers, Everett and Walter; sisters: Marie Moxon, Lillian Sirtonski and Harriett Houle. His remains will rest in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton, for visiting from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday from Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church with Father Charles Cameron officiating. Burial will be in the Parish cemetery. Reception to follow in the parish centre. Family flowers only. Donations in memory of Alvin may be made to a charity of one's choice.
