Anderson Heighton
Passed on: June 20th, 2008
PICTOU – Anderson Stalker Heighton, 85, of Faulkland Street, Pictou, passed away peacefully at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, on Friday, June 20, 2008, to enter into the glorious presence of his Lord Jesus. Anderson had attended Pictou Academy, where he was awarded the Tupper Gold Medal for highest academic standing in his class. He was a long-serving and valued employee of the Pictou (Ferguson) Shipyard. Highly gifted and creative, he was accomplished notably in Bible study, floral and vegetable gardening, and musical, composition, teaching and direction. His musical realm comprised soloists, duets, quartets, choirs, as well as skating and youth marching bands. Achievements in this field included members of his family, many churches, and the community. Anderson was remarkably self taught in both the wide scope of composition, and the skilful playing of diverse instruments: piano, organ, accordion, cornet, and tuba. He should also be respected for his dedicated service in Scouts, and the Canadian Army during World War 2. Born in Pictou, Anderson was a son of the late Charles and Jane (Redpath) Heighton. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and a host of admiring acquaintances. He is fondly remembered for his keen sense of humour, kindness, commitment, compassion, and open-door hospitality. (And on a lesser note his exquisite penmanship!) He is survived by his well-beloved and loving wife of 62 years, Grace (Hopkins), and daughter, Virginia (Willie McInnis), London, Ontario; son, Larry, Pictou; daughter, Beth (Brian Hallman), Lower Burlington. He is also survived by his siblings: sisters, Juanita, Pictou; Janet, Halifax; brothers, Vernon (Margaret), Ottawa; Lloyd, Toronto; Gordon (Mary), Guelph, Ontario; Vincent (Florence), Halifax; and Bruce (Eleanor), Pictou. He was predeceased by sisters, Irene, Joyce, and Hazel; and brothers, Gerald, Almour, and Robert. Also surviving this wonderful man are his fine grandsons, Sandy, Paradise, Newfoundland; Beau and Jamie, St. Albert, Alberta. Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday from the McLaren Funeral Home Chapel, Pictou, with Pastor Dave Campbell and Helen Christie officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations in his memory may be made to the Gideon Bible Society, ALS Research, or the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done.
