Edith Dorie
Passed on: November 28th, 2007
PICTOU – It is with sadness that the family of the late Edith Mary Dorie announce her passing on November 28, 2007, in the Shiretown Nursing Home in her 90th year. She will be welcomed with open arms by her late husband Henry, son Robbie, son-in-Law Gerry and her many ancestors. Edith was born the first daughter of Martha Jane (Sampson) and John Thomas McCarville in Pictou, hours preceding the infamous Halifax Explosion. Both Edith and her mother would relate how the bed shook at that time and their family physician, the late Dr. G.A. Dunn had to leave mother and infant, travel by train to Halifax to assist the injured. A stormy delivery and a peaceful passing. It was the era of mothers keeping the "Home Fires Burning" and like many others of the day, Edith stoked wood and coal furnaces, quilted, knitted and kept the household smoothly running until their loved ones returned from the war scene. Her home was a miniature version of the "Order of Good Cheer", filled with good food, good music and good friends. Numerous afghans, baby sets, sweaters, hats, mittens gloves and socks still adorn homes of family and friends Edith's church, family and community were most important to her. Her affiliations were many through the years; Pictou Home and School, Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Catholic Women’s League (Life Member), she was the last surviving member of the Friendly Ladies Bridge Club, New Horizons Seniors Club, and for over 30 years a proud member of the Pictou Harbour Group. Besides her parents, husband, son and son-in-law, she was predeceased by her bothers: Edward, James, Ernest, Ronald and Arthur; also sister Caroline. She will long be remembered for her unique character, which we will all miss and forever be affected, by her daughter, Sharon Ann Young, Pictou; grandchildren, Jill Young, Bristol, England, Jonathan Young, Brussels, Belgium; daughter-in-law, Heather (Dorie-Steele) and John Godberson, Ft. St John, B.C., granchildren: Trevor (Sandi) Dorie, (Paige and Shane), Ft. St. John, B.C., Troy and Trudy, Fort St John, B.C., Robyn and Frank Goertzen, (Dorie-Ann and Jorga), Grand Prairie, Alberta, Karla Dorie and Laurie Kerr, (Abagail and Steele) Calgary, Alberta; loving and devoted sisters, Mrs. Janet O'Brien, Kitchener, Ont., and Mrs. Connie Vassallo, Richmond, B.C., numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, December 8th, from Stella Maris Church, Pictou, with Father Peter MacDonald and Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity officiating. There will be no visitation but you are invited to sign the Book of Condolence which will be placed in the entrance of Stella Maris Church. Family flowers only please. Donations to the Stella Maris Restoration Fund or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
